Hispanic Art for Sale
“Alebrijes” are fanciful objects hand carved and painstakingly painted in brilliant and vibrant colors. They are made from the wood
of the copal tree and sometimes cedar. About 500 miles south of Mexico City, there are three small
towns outside of Oaxaca,
(pronounced wa-ha-ca) where these figures can be found. In each town there are a few
master carvers who are true sculptures. Here
we have several examples of two married couples, he carves, she
paints: Mario and Reina Castellanos and Claudio and Teresa Ojeda.
